Fort York

Hotels near Fort York, Toronto, Canada .

Established in 1793, the downtown Toronto National Historic Site of Fort York was built by the British Army and Canadian Militia troops. These military fortifications and related buildings primary function was to protect Canada from military attack by the recently independent United States. After being largely destroyed by the U.S. army and naval forces during the Battle of York in 1813, the brick and wood structures that exist today were built mostly by Royal Engineers after the war of 1812. Today visitors to Fort York find a museum operated by the City of Toronto. Visitors enjoy tours with historic interpreters, and during the summer season can see the Fort York Guard in action. The Fort is a ghost-hunterís dream, with frequent reports of paranormal activity, and the host of Torontoís Festival of Beer. Tours, cannon firing, drills, music and flag raisings all happen regularly throughout the day. Fort York is open daily year-round from 10am-5pm, and closes at 4pm during the winter season. Admissions are $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and youth, and $3 for children. Parking is free, and the Fort is accessible by the 511 streetcar on TTC public transit.
