As Florida’s southernmost state park, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park (more commonly called Fort Taylor) is important not only for its recreational offerings but also for its historic significance. Fort Zachary Taylor is a Civil War era structure constructed in the mid-19th century as part of a plan to defend the southeast coast. It played a key role in the 1898 Spanish-American War.

Today, visitors can still view and experience the fort while enjoying a day at Fort Taylor Park picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, hiking or fishing. This popular destination for both tourists and locals is open 365 days a year from 8:00 a.m. until sundown. Admission fees are $6.00 per vehicle, $2.00 for pedestrians and $4.00 for single-occupant vehicles (October 2009).
