The Fortaleza da Barro do Rio Grande, popularly known as the Forte dos Reis Magos, stands protection the mouth of the Potengi River in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Said to be the most important historical monument in Natal its construction predates the existence of the city itself with construction beginning on Santo Reis day January 6, 1598. A Portuguese military installation, it was used for protection against the native inhabitants and the French. Under military architect Francisco Frias de Mesquita it took its original shape as a five-tipped star in 1614. Later conquered by the Dutchmen of the Western Indias’ Company its name was changed to Keulen’s Castle, and served as a prison for Brazilian and Portuguese Captives. Today visitors will find a museum in the fort featuring exhibits about the colonization of Rio Grande do Norte. Fortaleza de Barro do Rio Grande is open to the public daily from 8am-4:45pm.
