Foster Botanical Garden

Hotels near Foster Botanical Garden, Honolulu, United States .

The Foster Botanical Garden in Honolulu, Hawaii, got its start in 1853 when a young German doctor and botanist, William Hillebrand, was leased a plot of land by Queen Kalama. He and his wife built a house on the property, and cultivated many native plant species; the trees they planted can still be seen on the property today, in fact. After returning to Hawaii, where he wrote a book on the flora of the island, the land was sold to Captain and Mrs. Foster, who continued with the upkeep of the grounds. Upon the death of Mrs. Foster, the land was left to the city, and was opened to the public in 1931. Over the years, more than 10,000 plant species have been introduced in the garden, which now includes a famous orchid collection. Today, the garden welcomes over 75,000 visitors annually, including children and school groups. Areas of special interest include the economic garden, with its array of dyes, poisons, spices, and beverage plants, the “exceptional trees,” and the prehistoric glen.
Admission is $5 general (age 13 and up), $3 for residents of Hawaii, $1 for children age 6 to 12, and free to children under 5. Guided tours run Monday through Saturday at 1 pm.

Visitors can find lodging at the Kahala Hotel and Resort and the Hale Koa Hotel.
