Fota Island
Fota Island is a small island situated in the Cork Harbor, Ireland, just north of the larger island of Cóbh. It has about 780 acres and is home to Ireland's only wildlife park - as well as the historical Fota House with ornamental gardens and an 18-hole golf course.
Established in 1983 with the main goal of conserving global wildlife Fota Wildlife Park has more than 70 species of exotic wildlife in open natural surroundings. Many of the animals at Fota are very close to extinction. The cheetah is an example of this as there are only 12,000 cheetahs in their natural habitat. Fota Wildlife Park is one of the breeders around the world for this endangered species, as well as being a source of many other zoo animals worldwide.
The 18th century Fota House was constructed and modified in various stages until the end of the 19th century. During the late part of the last century, the house fell into disrepair - culminating with the collapse of a ceiling. This closed the house to the public for some time until was restored using EU, Irish government and private funding, prior to reopening in early 2002. The house is a great building, with more than 70 rooms. In December 2007, the new Irish Heritage Trust took over the management for Fota House.
Fota Gardens are around the grounds of the house. They are highly acclaimed, consisting of a structured arboretum, walled garden, terraces and many rare and exotic shrubs and trees, also an extensive rose garden.
The island is served by Fota railway station, which opened on 1 July 1865 and lies just off the N25 road from Cork to Waterford.
