Fox Theatre

Hotels near Fox Theatre, Atlanta (Georgia), United States .

The Fox Theatre, often called the Fabulous Fox Theatre, is an example of the classic American movie houses of the 1920s. Financed by William Fox, a movie mogul and theater owner of the 1920s, the theater was one of many movie houses built by Fox, though it was one of the most extravagant. Originally planned as a Shriners mosque, the Fox features a heavy Moorish influence in its architecture and Egyptian themes in its interiors. Having opened just after the 1929 stock market crash, the Fox had a difficult beginning and declared bankruptcy in the 1930s. After thriving from the 1940s to the 1960s, suburban sprawl threatened the existence of the very large theater located in midtown Atlanta. Once close to demolition, a public campaign saved the Fox from the wrecking ball and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, becoming a National Historic Landmark in 1976. After a lengthy restoration process, the Fox has enjoyed continued success. It is home to the Atlanta ballet and a wide variety of performers, musicals and plays. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and 2 hours before any performance. Tickets can also be bought online through Ticketmaster. Some wheelchair seating is available. The Fox Theatre is located at 660 Peachtree Street NE, with parking options at street lots within a 4-block radius.

Accommodation include the Hotel Indigo and the Georgian Terrace, both within one block of the Fox.

See the theater’s home page http://www.foxtheatre.org/ or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Theatre_(Atlanta,_Georgia) for more info.
