Often called the “The Superdrum”, the Frank Erwin Center serves as the host venue for the University of Texas-Austin basketball teams. Due to its large size and its proximity to downtown Austin, the Frank Erwin Center is also one of the area's most popular arenas for large private and public events. It was constructed in 1977 to serve as a home to the men's and women's basketball teams and to function as a general purpose arena on the campus of the University of Texas-Austin. The name is in honor of former UT Board of Regents member Frank Erwin, who was also an alumni of UT. While many buildings from the same period are being torn down across the country because they appear outdated, the Center has remained a mainstay on the Austin scene due to its unique round design as well as the university's commitment to renovation.
