Frankfurt Zoological Garden
The Frankfurt Zoological Garden is located in Frankfurt, Germany and features over 5,000 animals of more than 600 species. It was founded in 1858 by the Frankfurt Zoological Societyand because the original site of the zoo was not large enough to allow for the growth of the collection, in 1874 the zoo was moved to its present 14 hectare site. It sits in the eastern part of the Innenstadt district.
One of the attractions is the Grzimek building where visitors can watch nocturnal animals such as bats or African aardvarks while they go about their routines. Another attraction is the Cat Jungle, where visitors can observe Indian lions, Sumatran tigers and rusty-spotted cats.
In the Exotarium visitors can learn about species diversity from the North Sea to the Amazon. This is where penguins, fresh and saltwater fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects live in their natural habitats. The seals that live here are crowd favorites.
The Frankfurt Zoo has an international reputation for being the first zoo to raise all four varieties of primate in one place. Since then, more than 100 cubs have been born here to gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos. In 2008 the Borgori Forest was opened, a completely new type of building for primates. As the name suggests, many trees, bushes, rocks and natural soil, make people and animals feel as if they are in the jungle.
The zoo features many other animal houses, such as bird halls, a giraffe house, and a rhinoceros house. Also, the zoo offers a children’s zoo and a petting zoo for young visitors, a large playground and pony rides on weekends. For adults, the program also offers special exhibitions, markets, events and individual guided tours. Zoo visitors can sit on an eventful day in the very comfortable atmosphere of one of the restaurants or beer gardens on the zoo premises.
