Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

Hotels near Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Washington D.C., United States .

Situated along the shores of the Tidal Basin, just south of Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C., the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was inaugurated in 1997 (by none less than President Bill Clinton himself) in honor of the country's longest-serving president. The memorial is the greatest achievement of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, who personally admired President Roosevelt greatly. Operated by the National Park Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the memorial is one of the highlights of downtown Washington.

Annually, the FDR Memorial attracts upwards of 2 million visitors, and the layout of the memorial is cleverly designed to allow visitors to roam around at will, discovering different aspects of this iconic president's legacy along the way. The memorial is divided into four distinct areas, each representing a different term of office held by Roosevelt. In addition to showing the president himself (a major controversy was sparked during the memorial's realization by disabled person advocates who wanted a clear depiction of the president's wheelchair-bound status), the memorial depicts his wife, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as other aspects of national life at the time.

The memorial is accessible to disabled persons in honor of the president's own condition. As a public federal park, the memorial is free to visitors who must arrive during normal park hours, which are essentially in line with sun-up and sun-down.
