While Philadelphia is known as the birthplace of democracy, it is not as widely known as a spot where many important scientific breakthroughs and advances and technology occurred.

Named after Benjamin Franklin, who himself made a number of scientific breakthroughs, The Franklin Institute Science Museum is one of the oldest museums and science centers in the entire country. The museum began in 1825, and has grown and changed significantly since then, with new buildings added and the whole thing split into three unique branches.

The Franklin Institute Science Museum is known for a number of popular permanent exhibits, including a gigantic heart, a moving train, something called Space Command, where visitors can enjoy actual space suits and do some satellite tracking, and Amazing Machine, the latest exhibit to be made permanent. The museum also houses a large number of visiting or traveling exhibits, including ones on Darwin, Robots, and the popular Grossology traveling show.

The Franklin Institute Science Museum is open daily from nine-thirty until five, with the IMAX theater and the live theater keeping slightly different hours.
