The Fraunhofer Society is known as ‘Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’ in German and is a research organization. There are many institutes that are associated with it and they are located in different parts of Germany. Each institute specializes in a particular field relating to applied science. Most of the funding is obtained from industry or government projects. The name behind the society was Joseph von Fraunhofer who was an entrepreneur, engineer and scientist. There are centres at Asia and United States (i.e. Fraunhofer USA). The society’s official name is ‘Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung’ which means ‘Fraunhofer Society for the advancement of applied research’.
The founders of the society were the Federal Republic, Bavaria government and representatives from the industry and also academia. While it was founded on March 26 1949 at Munich, it was declared as German research’s non-university part during 1952.
Following the energy crisis of 1979, there was a re-look at energy policies in countries throughout the world and attention was diverted to solar power and development of solar technologies. Incentive programs like Sunshine Program (Japan) and ‘Federal Photovoltaic Utilization Program’ (United States) were deployed. Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems or ISE was a research facility of that period (1981). It is not part of any University and has become a popular research initiative in Solar Energy.
In ISE, research is not only conducted inside the labs but also in test areas and thus it spans a large area.
