Fred Bear Museum

Hotels near Fred Bear Museum, Gainesville (Florida), United States .

The Fred Bear Museum has a story as interesting as the man it memorializes, Fred Bear, who popularized archery and bow hunting in the United States. Born in 1902, he began to make bows and related equipment as a hobby before escalating into commercial production in 1939 and trying out new materials like fiberglass for bow construction. In the 1940s, production was moved to Grayling, Michigan, where he displayed many of his hunting trophies that grew into the first Fred Bear Museum, which opened officially in 1967. In 1978, the plant moved to Gainesville, Florida and the museum followed seven years later. The Florida museum continued operating until 2003, when Bear Archery sold the museum's collection to the Bass Pro Shops chain of sporting goods stores.

The Gainesville industrial plant continues to manufacture Fred Bear branded bow hunting and archery paraphernalia, but the museum is no longer operating. The current Fred Bear Museum is displayed at the headquarters store of Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, Missouri and is closed for renovations until 2010, but fans of the man can view the plant at 4600 Southwest Forty-First Boulevard. Nearby accommodation options include the Holiday inn, the Hampton Inn and Suites and the Red Roof Inn.
