Frederick Douglass National Historic Site

Hotels near Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Washington D.C., United States .

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., covers a total area of 9 acres in the city's Anacostia neighborhood, located at the intersection of 14th Street SE and W Street SE. The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site includes the legendary African American leader's final home (at which he lived from 1877 through his death in 1895). Having been owned by his widow and later the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs until 1962, it was subsequently purchased and renovated by the federal government through the National Park Service, which continues to operate the site to the present day.

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site operates as a museum on the iconic figure's life and achievements, and includes an interpretive area in "the growlery," the preferred spot on the property where Douglass would retreat for deep thought and study. Tours are available without reservation, however the National Park Service highly recommends making reservations to guarantee a spot on a tour for all visitors. Reservations can be made online or over the phone and carry a service charge of $1.50 per person. All tours are led by a park ranger and persons are not allowed to wander unaccompanied by a ranger. Hours of operation vary by season, ranging from 9am-4pm or 9am-5pm.
