The Free University of Brussels i.e. ULB or ‘Université Libre de Bruxelles’ ( Non-Denominational University of Brussels or Free University of Brussels) is a French University. 2004 THES ranked it 54 among the world’s universities while its rank was 183 in 2008 THES. The University’s history is linked to Belgium’s history. After the formation of Belgian State during 1830 when 9 provinces broke from Netherlands, the country had 3 state universities namely Leuven, Liege and Ghent. Brussels became a capital but it did not have any University.
Promoters Auguste Baron and Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen were behind the University formation and the 1st academic year was 1834. The soccer team of the school even went on to win bronze medal (Summer Olympics of 1900). 20th November marks the University’ creation and it is known as St V day.
From 1935, only some courses were taught in Dutch and French. Later, in 1963 all the courses were delivered in these two languages. Due to Catholic University of Leuven’s language dispute on October of 1969, two Universities were formed each for the two languages.
There are 3 main campuses and numerous faculties for each field of education. Alumni of the University have made a mark in various fields like Economics, Law, Physics, Medicine, Maths, Politics, Administration, Business, Criminology, Biochemistry etc. Some of them are winners of the Nobel Prize.
