The Freer Gallery of Art is part of the Museum of Asian Art, but features many works of American art as well. Charles Lang Freer, a businessman from Detroit, began collecting American art in the 1880s, with a special focus on James McNeill Whistler’s work. The gallery features the largest collection of work by Whistler, as well as an impressive collection of Eastern art, from Egyptian works from the time of the Pharaohs to Islamic arts and early Biblical manuscripts.

The gallery is located at 1050 Independence Avenue SW on the National Mall. It is open every day of the year except Christmas, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.
