French Huguenot Church

Hotels near French Huguenot Church, Charleston (South Carolina), United States .

The first Gothic Revival church to be built in South Carolina, the French Huguenot Church is one of Charleston's most vamous historical attractions. In 1973, it was declared a National Historic Landmark and is today the only independent Huguenot church in the United States.

Originally built in 1844, the architecture was designed by Eduard Brickell Whie. At the time, it was a part of the Calvinist Reformed Church of France.

The Huguenots had come to the US in the sixteenth century. Fleeing prosecution in France, they established colonies in many areas of the Southern US. Today the church offers regular services in English and holds an annual mass in French to celebrate the beginning of spring. The church's congregation follows the Calvinist doctrine.

The church office is open on weekdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Worship services take place on Sundays at 10:30 am.
