The French Legation is situated in a quiet neighborhood just a few blocks away from the famous East Sixth Street district of Austin, and a short distance from the Texas State Capitol. Built in 1841, the French Legation was originally intended to be the home to the French chargé d'affaires to the Republic of Texas - the official representative of the French government to the Republic of Texas (an independent country from 1836 until 1845). Three years after the Texas Annexation of 1845 resulted in Texas joining the United States, the French Legation was purchased as a private residence, and today serves as a museum, owned by the State of Texas.

The French Legation Museum is now a tribute to the days of the Republic, including original furniture from the French chargé d'affaires and a reconstructed French country kitchen. The French Legation Museum is located at 802 San Marcos Street in Austin, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, and $2 for students and teachers, and includes a guided tour. The French Legation Museum is also available for weddings and events.
