With tracks seven meters above sea level, The Freshwater Connection Station in Cairns is the perfect site for visitors to begin a journey of the Kuranda Scenic Railway. The Freshwater Connection was built in 1984 to honor pioneers and visionaries who constructed the Kuranda Scenic Railway between 1887 and 1891.

Today, the railway, which is nested in a tranquil leafy suburb in the middle of a tropical garden, is considered an authentic heritage. It allows visitors to hold diverse functions ranging from a traditional Australian barbecue or a casual lunch buffet.

The restaurant is designed to make the most of tropical rain showers with its ‘ripple iron’ arched ceilings. Permanently placed railway carriages are eighty five years old and provide an elegant dining experience with the railway’s original twenty-four volt electrical supply providing the soft yellow light which warms visitors as they relax in the air conditioned comfort.

Also available for tours is a theaterette, museum and a pioneer cottage where student and tour groups can participate in educational and interesting tours.
