The airport is located in eastern Fresno and is only 60 miles from Yosemite National Park, and is also close to the Millerton Lake State Recreation Area and the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Its two runways are used by commercial aircraft it is also home to the Fresno Air National Guard Base and the 144th Fighter Wing of the California Air National Guard. Opening in 1944, the airfield was first known as Hammer Field and used by the Air Force, before being turned over to civilian operations at the end of World War II.

Over one million passengers pass through the airport annually, but few know that in 2008 a solar energy system was begun that within 20 years will provide $13 million dollars in energy savings for the airport.

Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, American/American Eagle, Delta Airlines/Skywest, Horizon Air, Mexicana Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways offer connections to regional hubs in the western US and Mexico. There are two flights daily to Los Angeles. The Terminal is open 3 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., or last flight arrival daily, and features two restaurants in addition to a Starbucks. The Airport Barber Shop has been operating in the same location for more than 37 years.
