Friedrichstadt

Friedrichstadt is an urban borough of the German city of Düsseldorf. It is in the south of the Central District of Düsseldorf, north of Bilk, west of Oberbilk, and east of Unterbilk, all of them districts of Düsseldorf.

Friedrichstadt was completely planned and built in the middle of the 19th century. After it was planned completely in a tessellated paradigm, in 1854 the building began. It got its name in honor to King Frederick William IV of Prussia. After a short while the district developed well and became a borough mainly for officers and public clerks. Even today in Friedrichstadt is a lot of built volume in Wilhelminian style.

In 1880 the Parliament of the Prussian Rhine Province moved in the Ständehaus (House of States) in Friedrichstadt. Until the year 1988 the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia was located in the Ständehaus. Nowadays, an Arts museum is in that building.

The idea of the Garden City is a concept proved in Friedrichstadt. The garden architect Maximilian Weyhe designed two parks with ponds in Friedrichstadt.
