Fries Museum

Fries Museum features cultural highlights of the Dutch province of Friesland and a host of contemporary local art. It is located in the historical area of Leeuwarden, the Frisian capital.

Housed in an 18th century mansion, Fries Museum is the biggest provincial museum of the Netherlands. The building is steeped in rich history, starting out as Esyngahuis, the town residence of the Frisian nobility. Today, visitors can marvel at the Louis XVI style interiors reminiscent of the austere and sombre atmosphere of the late 18th century. The museum also pays homage to modern Dutch art with its exhibitions of photographs, video, prints and installation art.

Leeuwarden is perhaps more famous as the hometown of the ill-fated dancer and courtesan, Mata Hari, who was executed for supposed espionage activities during World War I. People can find out more about her life inside the Mata Hari room in Fries Museum.
