Located in a building that used to house a post office, The Frist Center For Visual Arts was founded thanks to the Frist Foundation and its generous funding of conversion for the building to become a museum. The museum officially opened in 2001, and is used as a space to showcase visual art from all over the country, as well as abroad. Much of the focus is based on local art, and the folk arts are also given a fair share of space in the 24,000 square foot museum.

Less focused on a permanent collection than many other more traditional museums, The Frist Center For Visual Arts relies mostly on traveling exhibitions and temporary exhibitions from its own permanent collection. This constant rotation of artwork means that the museum is also able to draw a sizable local crowd, since it's more than just the same old exhibitions over and over.

The Frist Center For Visual Arts is open daily. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday, the museum is open from ten in the morning until five-thirty in the afternoon. On Thursday and Friday, hours are extended until nine in the evening. On Sunday, the museum is open from one in the afternoon until five-thirty only.
