Fritz Walter Stadion is a football stadium in Kaiserslautern, Germany. It is the home to the Second Bundesliga football club 1. FC Kaiserslautern. It was built in 1920 as a clay court. In 1926 the clay was replaced by lawn. The first major restructuring at the stadium happened in 1932 with the construction of two Stehrängen and a platform in the North. The capacity was expanded thereby to 18,000 spectators.
Over the following decades, the stadium was modernized and expanded again. Already the first major renovation in 1953 resulted in an increased capacity of 30,000 spectators. The other developments meant that until 1972 was reached a capacity of approximately 38,000 spectators. Especially in the 90s, the stadium was retreaded with the construction of the North and South Stands and the North Stand for the first time offered modern comforts such as VIP boxes and a new interior for the spectators behind the grandstand.
The capacity is now after the conversion at the 2006 World Cup officially 48,500. At the 2006 World Cup, the audience was still listed with 46,000 spectators, as the expansion of the press section took on the North Stand to a reduction in the regular seats. For national games are approved with an exemption of up to 50,754 spectators. This figure, which was also a spectator record for the Fritz Walter Stadion was represented in the national league game of the 1st FC Kaiserslautern v FC Bayern Munich, 6 Achieved in May 2006.
The stadium has had its current name from 2 November 1985 on the occasion of the 65th Birthdays of the honorary captain of the national team, Fritz Walter. Previously, it was simply Betzenberg stadium.
