The Fugger Museum pays homage to one of the famous citizens of Augsburg, Germany. Jakob Fugger The Rich was a very wealthy merchant who donated generously to the Catholic Church and monarchies around Europe during his time. The Fuggerei is his most popular contribution to Augsburg society as it provides dwellings for the city’s underprivileged citizens.

Established in 1521, the Fuggerei is the oldest social housing complex in the world. Residents in the 67 houses need only pay a small fraction from the regular housing rental fees and offer daily prayers for the Fugger family. To sample the life within the Fuggerei, people can visit the model apartment, which is furnished and serves as showroom. The Fuggerei Museum is located in the oldest well-preserved apartment, showcasing the housing complex through the years. Exhibits about the Fuggers are also part of the highlights. An old bunker inside the community houses artifacts and information of war-torn years in the Fuggerei.
