Drag racing is a more than a spectator sport: it is an activity that brave souls can dare to try, and there is no better place than the Gainesville Raceway. This quarter-mile drag strip opened in 1969 and is most known for hosting the National Hot Rod Association's prestigious Gatornationals event since 1970. Gainesville Raceway also has a separate 1.6-mile road course designed for testing cars and for use by driving schools. Gainesville Raceway also hosts many other annual events including a Lucas Oil Division 2 Race, and of course weekly racing during all seasons except the summer. Many records were broken on the track was the first 6.5 second Pro Stock Car run and in 1992 Kenny Bernstein broke the 300 mile-per-hour barrier.

Fees for racing your own car are $25, and $5 to watch. These “drag races” are every Wednesday and Saturday. The entire track can be rented for private events. Tickets to races can be bought at the track before race time and cost between $16 to $58 for the least expensive locations, depending on the race day, weekends being more expensive than weekdays. The Florida Natural History Museum is another attraction that is close by the Gainesville Raceway.

Nearby lodging options include the Best Western, the Clarion Inn & Conference Center, and Hilton-University of Florida.
