Galleries of Justice in Nottingham is the name of a museum dedicated to the Britons’ fascination for crime and punishment. The building called Shire Hall is in the Lace Market area, which is believed to be a settlement of the Saxons during the Dark Ages. The earliest known use of Shire Hall as a courthouse was in 1375 and later in 1149 as a gaol or prison.

From the macabre to the gruesome tales and the well-documented stories of popular cases handled in the courthouse, the Galleries of Justice serves to satiate the penchant for spine-tingling crime stories. Among the interesting highlights is the HM Prison Service that provides a look into Britain’s prison life through the centuries.

Morbid tales of punishment can be had at the Sheriff’s Dungeon, which features archaic torture methods and weapons. A section on the most notorious Nottingham outlaw, Robin Hood, is also included in the exhibitions.

The Galleries of Justice, found right in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter, is only a 10-minute walk from the Nottingham rail station. City trams also pass the Galleries through the nearest stop that is Lace Market. Hotels nearby offer well-rounded range of amenities in the vibrant city centre.
