For an excellent example of 19th century American architecture, the Gallier House in New Orleans' French Quarter is just the right place to go. Located at 1132 Royal Street, the Gallier House (or Gallier Historic House) was originally built in 1857 as the personal home of one of the city's best known architects, James Gallier, Jr.

Today, the Gallier House has been completely restored and is currently operated as a historical museum, with everything set to mirror exactly the way things were back in the 1850s. Since 1974, the Gallier House has been considered a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Italianate style of the building is simply unrivaled by all but a few of the city's and the country's 19th century structures, and is well worth a visit when in New Orleans. It is open for tours to the public between Monday and Friday, with tours starting at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm on the hour.
