For travelers bringing their cars with them down to Texas, at least a little bit of vacation time will be spent on The Galveston Causeway. The causeway, which is basically a continuance of Interstate 45, goes from Galveston proper over the bay and intracoastal waterway over onto Galveston Island. It's also the only free roadway access to Galveston Island available.

Like so many other important landmarks around Galveston, The Galveston Causeway has endured its share of hurricane related damage over the years. After Hurricane Ike in 2003 wreaked havoc unseen since The Great Storm of 1900, reconstruction efforts had to be started just to get the bridge back up to shape. Two replacement bridges are currently under construction, and will provide travelers with even better access to the island.

Ironically, the whole reason that The Galveston Causeway was built in the first place was to provide island-dwellers with a safe method of transportation off of the island in case of a storm emergency. A number of hotels on the island are just off of the causeway, including The Howard Johnson Express Hotel, The Motel 6 Galveston, and The Moody Gardens Hotel.

The Galveston Causeway itself is on the country's register of historic places.
