The Galveston County Historical Museum, whose staff are located at 123 Rosenberg, Suite 4157 in Galveston, Texas, moved temporarily to the Shearn Moody Plaza building at Strand and 25th Street, Suite 4157 in the wake of Hurricane Ike. The museum is currently closed for public viewing, but donations are welcome to assist with research and the improvement of the historical artifact collection. The mission of the Galveston County Historical Museum is to further the knowledge and appreciation of the heritage of Galveston County. The museum is a part of the Texas Historical Marker Program, which preserves markers which discuss the area's history, such as the Battle of Galveston. During this battle, commander W.B. Renshaw led a fleet into Galveston harbor to press for the surrender of the important port in 1862.
