Even though Hurricane Ike took its toll on the beautiful shoreline of Galveston Island, there's still a lot to do at Galveston Island State Park. A nice opportunity to take a break from more populated beaches with noise and crowds, the park is a beautiful and natural stretch of coastline that was opened in 1975.

Over 2,000 acres of Galveston Island are occupied by the State Park, which is protected from rampant development and construction. In addition to the pristine beaches and nice dunes to take hikes through, there are a number of activities available for visitors, including bird-watching, nature tours of the flora and fauna, and tours of the bay. There's also a large number of mountain bike trails available to explore, and primitive beach camping.

The waters near Galveston Island State Park are so temperate that it's possible to swim year-round. Fishing is also a hugely popular activity for visitors to the park.

A number of the most popular attractions on the island are just a short distance from Galveston Island State Park, including the Strand Historical District, the Seaport Museum, and the Railroad Museum. For travelers who don't feel like spending the night in a tent, a few of the island's hotels are just a short way away, including The Flagship Hotel, The Harbor House, and The Wyndham Hotel.
