Garden of the Gods

One of the most stunning examples of natural scenery in the western United States, Garden of the Gods public park officially came into the hands of Colorado Springs in 1909. In that year, the children of Charles Perkins donated the land beloved by their father to the city and fulfilled his wishes of keeping the place as a public park. Perkins, chief of the Burlington Railroad, had bought the two hundred and forty acre plot of land in 1879 with plans of making a summer home here while he considered trying to extend his rail line to Colorado Springs. Instead of building, Perkins kept the place and it has become a major tourist destination.

Named by two surveyors who marveled at the land in the 1850s, Garden of the Gods is an excellent place for rock climbing, hiking, bike riding, horseback riding, or just sightseeing. Bring a camera along for some breathtaking nature shots. Special events include lectures, Earth Day celebrations and two annual foot races.

The park is open from 5am to 11pm, seven days a week, from May 1 to October 31. From November 1 to April 30 the park closes at 9pm. The Visitor and Nature Center is open from 9am to 5pm in the winter and 8am to 8pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Admission to the park and visitor center is free. Parking is available at the site.

Accommodations are available in the area for visitors who want to stay overnight. Garden of the Gods Club on Mesa Road offers sweeping views of the park itself. There are also several hotels on Colorado Avenue, including the San Ayre and the Mecca Motel.
