Opened in 1966, the Gastonia Amtrak Station (GAS) was originally established to serve passengers of the now defunct Southern Railways. Since 1979, when Amtrak took over all Southern Railways lines, the Gastonia Amtrak Station has served as a stop on the Crescent Line, which stretches from New Orleans, Louisiana all the way north to New York City. The Gastonia station is located approximately 10 miles west of Charlotte, North Carolina, just south of Interstate 85.

Gastonia Amtrak Station serves just over 1,800 passengers annually; with rail traffic increasing approximately five percent per year. The station is located just northeast of downtown Gastonia, within easy walking distance of landmarks such as the Franklin and East Ridge shopping centers, and a short drive from Ranklin Lake and Flyer Park.

On-site parking is available at the Gastonia Amtrak Station free of charge for passengers, and although the station does not keep regular hours, the Crescent Line stops at Gastonia one time daily in each direction. The station address is 350 Hancock Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. Local hotel accommodations include the Days Inn Gastonia – West of Charlotte, Holiday Inn Express Gastonia, and Motel 6 Gastonia.
