Gastown is a neighborhood in the northeastern section of downtown Vancouver, now a national historic location. Originally the site of Vancouver’s first modest city center in the 1860s, Gastown has always retained a raffish seaside feeling.

In 1867, a steamboat captain named Gassy Jack Deighton opened a saloon – the city’s first – and began the tradition of the neighborhood as the rowdy drinking district for seamen on layover. Gastown was done in by the great fire of 1886, but the area was rebuilt and it made its way back as the drinking center of the city, all the way until Prohibition. Later, after a severe deterioration by the 1960s, the neighborhood was revitalized and it is something of a tourist attraction today.
