The Gateway Bridge in Brisbane is considered a triumph in engineering and was constructed as an added crossing on the Brisbane River to accommodate the surging traffic growth which regularly increases throughout the 21st century. In the late seventies, about 180,000 motor vehicles used the Story and Captain Cook bridges in order to cross the river each day.

The Queensland government prioritized the need for an alternate bridge when the Story and Captain Cool bridges reached near their maximum weight capacity. In 1978, the Government of Queensland organized the identification, financing, designing, operations, construction and maintenance of tunnels and bridges across Brisbane River. It was Murarrie, which is a venue between Queensport and Eagle Farm which was identified, and chosen to serve the industrial eastern city section.

The Gateway Bridge location was chosen to be Murarrie in order to serve both the Brisbane Airport and port facilities as well as the eastern industrial section of the city, and a $140 million contract was made to complete the building of a bridge. The Bridge’s unique shape was made to adjust to air traffic height restrictions as well as navigational clearance restrictions. The Bridge is 64.5metres in height and is 1.63 kilometres wide across the Brisbane River. Its width was the world record for pre-stressed concrete free cantilever bridge at the time.
