No trip to Florida would be complete without seeing an alligator in person, and fortunately, those traveling to Orlando are in luck. Just a short way from most of the major theme park resorts that most families flock to Florida for is the self-described "alligator capital of the world," and one of the more interesting tourist attractions around.

Gatorland is both an educational experience and an exciting park, where gators live in a protected habit and visitors have the opporunity to see them, along with a number of other species indigenous to Florida, up close. Part conservatory and part theme park, this former theme park has grown since opening in the 1940s and now attracts tons of visitors each year.

In addition to different habitats and exhibitions on crocodiles and alligators from all over, Gatorland also has a play area, even featuring a place for children to cool off, with no real alligators, but a number of fun water-shooting statues. Adults can take a break, too, and browse the gift shop.

Gatorland is open every day from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. There's free parking, and visits can be timed around the daily animal shows, which change with the seasons.
