Gellért Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool, also called Gellért fürdo or Gellért Baths, are a bath complex in Budapest, Hungary, built between 1912 and 1918 in the Art Nouveau style. The complex is located at the Buda-side foot of the Liberty-bridge in the immediate neighborhood of the Saint Gellert square, at Kelenhegyi street 4-6. The truly stunning construction is ornamented by both eastern and western elements.
References to healing waters on this site are found from as early as the 13th century. A hospital was situated on this location during the Middle Ages. During the reign of the Ottoman Empire, baths were built on this particular place. The baths were damaged during World War II, but rebuilt after.
The Gellért Baths complex offers thermal baths, which are small pools containing water from Gellért hill's mineral hot springs. The waters composition includes calcium, magnesium, hydro carbonate, alkalis, chloride, sulfate, and fluoride. There are two different thermal baths and according to the signs on their walls, one is around 36°C and the other around 38°C. The thermal baths are decorated with mosaic tiles. The complex also offers saunas and plunge pools (segregated by gender), an open-air swimming pool which can create artificial waves every ten minutes and an swimming pool. The complex also has a Finnish sauna with cold pool and a children's pool. Masseuse services are available and the baths also offer a range of medical services.
The Gellert Bath is one of the first baths in Budapest. Its notoriety is further enhanced by the fact that the guests of Hotel Gellert can use the baths free of charge, even though the building belongs to the Budapest Bath Directory, and not to the management of the hotel.
