The Gendarmenmarkt

The Gendarmenmarkt is a square in Berlin and is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe - a must for every tourist. Here the Deutscher Dom , the Französischer Dom and the Konzerthaus create a beautiful architectural complex. In the centre of the Gendarmenmarkt stands a statue of Germany's poet Friedrich Schiller. The square was created by Johann Arnold Nering in the end of the 17th century as the Linden-Markt and reconstructed by Georg Christian Unger in 1773. The Gendarmenmarkt took it’s name after the cuirassier regiment Gens d'Armes, which was deployed in this square until 1773.
During The Second World War most of the buildings were badly damaged or destroyed. Today all the buildings are restored to their former glory.

The French Cathedral ( Französischer Dom) the older of the two cathedrals was errected by the Huguenot community between 1701 and 1705. The cathedral copied the destroyed Huguenot church in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, France. Today, The French cathedral has a viewing platform, a restaurant and a Huguenot museum.

The German Cathedral ( Deutscher Dom) is situated in the south side of the Gendarmenmarkt. It has a pentagonal shape designed by Martin Grünberg and constructed in 1708 by Giovanni Simonetti. The German cathedral was entirely destroyed during World War II through fire in 1945. After the German reunification the cathedral was reconstructed, finalized in 1993 and re-opened in 1996 as a museum of German history.
The Konzerthaus Berlin is the most recent construction on the Gendarmenmarkt. It was errected by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1821 as the Schauspielhaus. It was built over the ruins of the National Theatre, destroyed by fire in 1817. Like the other buildings in this square, it was also severely damaged during World War II and reconstruction, finished in 1984, turned the theatre into a concert hall. Today, it houses the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
The Gendarmenmarkt is also the home of one of Berlin's most popular Christmas markets.
