Georgetown University is one of the oldest educational institutions in the United States, its roots extending back to 1634. Officially founded by John Carroll in 1789, the university underwent significant expansion in the Post-Civil War era. It is the oldest Roman Catholic university in the United States.

Georgetown has three urban campuses prized for their green space. Its main campus, Healy Hall, is a designated National Historic Landmark. Divided into four graduate schools and four undergraduate schools, it has a large and diverse student body noted for its political activism as well as its international community.

There are 172 registered student organizations in a number of areas, ranging from media to performing arts to religion. Greek life plays a somewhat important part at the school, though Georgetown does not recognize or fund any fraternities or sororities on its campus. Students also enjoy celebrating special events at Georgetown, including Georgetown Day, Homecoming and Midnight Madness.
