The German Colony was established in Haifa by the German Templars in 1868. The colony established in Haifa was the first of several colonies established in Israel. Other German colonies can be found in Sarona, Galilee and Jerusalem.

Christoph Hoffman and Georg David Hardegg, members of the Templar Society, came to Haifa from Germany. Hoffman established a second templar community in Jaffa, whereas Hardegg stayed to establish the community in Haifa. Construction of the German Colony was much admired during the time. The colony’s main street was the most beautiful built during that era and houses were built of stone. One of the first buildings built in the colony was the Beit Am or House of the People. It served as a place of worship and community center back in the day.

Recently, the German Colony in Haifa is undergoing renovations and preservations, bringing back the life and beauty of the German Colony. Now, buildings along Ben Gurion Boulevard have turned into cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The colony has even become a center for Haifa nightlife. The German Colony is near the Bahai Gardens. Visitors walking along the streets of Ben-Gurion will have spectacular views of the garden. It is recommended that visitors begin touring at the lower entrance to Bahai Gardens and then proceed all the way along the busy Ben-Gurion Street to finally arrive at the City Center for shopping, eating and other sources of leisure. The German Colony is wheelchair accessible and is open daily.
