German Emigration Centre

German Emigration Centre is one of the ethnological museums in Germany, located in Bremerhaven, from which seven million people set sail to find greener pastures in America. It is an important data collection centre for those who want to trace their family records and lineages.

The focal point of the museum is the Gallery of the Seven Million where the Centre keeps records of the emigration stories of the millions of Germans who moved to America. There’s even a replica of the original steamship in the Wharf, which became the site of many tearful farewells between 1830 and 1974. Other exhibitions show the rest of the journeys for the emigrants such as their life onboard the ship and upon arrival at Ellis Island in New York.

The port city of Bremerhaven is found in the German state of Bremen. It plays a major role in the country’s trading routes, as it did back in the 1800s.
