The Deutsche Nationaltheater is the most important musical and theatrical venue in Weimar, Germany. It is a twin institution, consisting of the theatrical Deutsches Nationaltheater and the symphony orchestra known as the Staatskapelle Weimar. It has six stages scattered across the city and also hosts touring orchestras and theatre companies from the German-speaking world, as well as making appearances in electronic media.
The today’s Deutsches Nationaltheater (German National Theatre) is the third such building to stand on the site. It was errected by Heilmann & Littmann in 1906. The theatre has had a long and distinguished career up to now. Goethe was director of the original theater for some years, Franz Liszt and Richard Strauss worked here as conductors, and Wagner’s Lohengrin received its world premiere here. The theatre still stages a vast variety of shows throughout the year.

In front of the Theater is a statue of Goethe and Schiller made by Ernst Rietschel, 1857.
The Deutsches Nationaltheater was where the German National Assembly met to draw up the constitution for the new German Republic, constitution which was passed a year later on November 8, 1919.
During World War II, the building was transformed into an armament factory, beginning with 1944.
Straight across from the National Theater where the Weimar constitution was written, stands the Bauhaus museum which commemorates the Bauhaus movement of modern architecture, founded by the liberal leftist Walter Gropius
