Adastral Park

The Adastral Park is a science campus based at Martlesham near Ipswich, in Suffolk, United Kingdom.

Initially, all the research was made to improve the postal sorting and delivery technology and telecommunications but after 1980, all the research concentrated on telecommunications.

Buildings on site are named after stars or constellations to keep up with the stellar theme of the site name. The Orion building has a 200 feet high radio tower (now is named Pegasus tower) which dominates the skyline. This tower makes the building easily recognizable from the nearby A12 road. The actual name comes from the motto of the RAF (Royal Air Force) –per adua ad astra- which means “through adversity to stars”. Here were tested experimental aircrafts at the beginning period of the science park.

Today, the objective of the park is the development of a technology community, providing access to world class postgraduate research. The Faculty of Engineering Sciences from The University College London has chosen to set up the first ever postgraduate research and teaching centre on an industrial campus in 2001. 400 people are housed by the site nowadays.

A satellite earth station operated by Arqiva Company is in the complex. This location was chosen because it offers good visibility of satellites on the eastern horizon.

The Adastral Park is accessible taking the bus from Suffolk or renting a car.
