The site of the bloodiest and most famous battle of the American Civil War, Gettysburg National Military Park was established by President Grover Cleveland in 1895. The battle itself, which raged from July 1st through the 3rd of 1863, was a turning point in the war, and claimed over 51,000 casualties, in a town that had 2,400 residents at the time. Four months later, on November 19, 1863, the Soldiers’ National Cemetery was dedicated in the Park, with President Abraham Lincoln giving his famous Gettysburg Address.

The Gettysburg National Military Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and today welcomes over 1.6 million visitors annually. Of particular note at the Park are the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, the David Wills House, where Lincoln stayed the night before the Gettysburg Address, and the Camp Life exhibit, which exposes visitors to the harsh life of Civil War Soldiers. Also noteworthy is the film “A New Birth of Freedom”, narrated by Morgan Freeman, and shown in the Park Museum.

Park hours are from 6 A.M. until 10 P.M. daily between April and October, and 6 A.M. until 7 P.M. daily November through March. The museum is open from 8 A.M. until 5 P.M. daily, with extended hours during the summer. Admission ranges from $6.50 to $10.50 per person, with guided tours available for an additional fee.
