Gewandhaus is a concert hall in Leipzig, Germany. Today's hall is the third to bear this name and like the second, it is known for its fine acoustics.
The name of the Gewandhaus dates back to 1498, when the space was used as an exposition centre for clothiers. The first Gewandhaus was erected in 1781 by architect Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe. The second opened on December 11, 1884, and was destroyed in the fire-bombings of the Second World War between 1943 and 1944. The third Gewandhaus on Augustusplatz opened on October 8, 1981 and is currently the home of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
The Neues Gewandhaus Leipzig, constructed from 1971 to 1981, represents the first and only new built pure concert hall of the former GDR(East Germany). A group of architects under guidance of Horst Siegel worked together on this project.
