Located right in the city of Parnamirim, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, is the world’s largest cashew tree. Also known as the Pirangi Cashew Tree, it covers about 7500 square meters, and has a perimeter of around 500 meters. Planted in 1888 by Luiz Inácio de Oliveira, it owes its gargantuan size due to genetic anomalies. The first anomaly is that the branches grow sideways, the second is that the branches- which eventually reach the ground- take new root and begin to grow again. This growth pattern makes the tree look like several smaller trees, but it is, in fact, just one! As an added perk, visitors may pick and eat the cashews of which the tree grows about 80,000 seasonally. Park admission is R$2 and bi-lingual guides are available to English and Spanish speakers. Enjoy the view from above from the observation point, or browse several souvenir and kiosk stands set up directly outside the park.
