Giant Wild Goose Pagoda

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is also called Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It is a Buddhist pagoda situated in southern Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. The pagoda was built in 652 during the Tang dynasty. The pagoda originally consists of five stories. In 704, the pagoda was rebuilt during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian and during the Ming Dynasty the exterior brick facade of the pagoda was renovated.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda has many functions and one of them was to hold sutras and figurines of Buddha that were brought to China from India by Xuanzang, a Buddhist translator and traveler. Now, the statue of monk Xuanzang stands in front of the temple located close by the pagoda called the Temple of Great Maternal Grace; Da Ci’en.

Tourists can view the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda during the day and can have an added bonus when viewing the pagoda at night. This is because it is located next to a large square that hold the largest fountain in Asia. The fountain projects water high into the air in time to music. After sunset, the fountain shoots water high into the air accompanied by great music and playful colored lights.
