History might take center stage in Charleston, but that doesn't mean that the city isn't also interested in the arts. Established in 1858 as The Carolina Art Association, The Gibbes Museum of Art has been around in one form or another since then. The museum is worth visiting alone just for a look at the impressively gorgeous building that houses it, complete with Tiffany-style dome and gigantic columns.

The museum's history is almost as interesting as its collection. Wealthy benefactor James Schoolbred Gibbes left The Carolina Arts Association $100,000 when he died in 1899, with the stipulation that the building eventually house a significant portion of his art, too. There's no better museum for those interested in seeing paintings related to Charleston and southern life in general, and over 10,000 works are shown, including those by Jeremiah Theus and Mary Roberts.

Visitors of the museum can enjoy a number of modern options for getting to know the art at The Gibbes Museum of Art a little better, including a cell phone audio tour, which is included with admission. For travelers interested in a more in-depth introduction to the works, there are guided walking tours available by reservation each day, which promise an insightful and informative two hours of learning.

The museum is closed on Mondays, but is open from one to five on Sunday, and from ten until five Tuesday through Saturday. Located in the heart of Charleston's historic downtown district, a number of hotels are just a short walk away, including The Days Inn Charleston Historic District, The Mills House Hotel, and The Elliott House Inn.
