You may be surprised to find out that the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of art of the American West is found in Tulsa’s Gilcrease Museum. Many of America’s most famous artists have their work displayed in the museum, including Joseph Henry Sharp and Thomas Moran. Named for Thomas Gilcrease, oil man and art collector, the museum is also the home of a sizable collection of art and artifacts of Central and South America.

One of the central exhibits of the Gilcrease Museum is the Native American Exhibition Enduring Spirit: Native American Artistic Traditions. It showcases many of the collection’s major strengths and reflects the beliefs of Thomas Gilcrease. The museum is also the home a large amount of anthropological collections and an archive collection of over 100,000 documents, books, manuscripts and maps.

Visitors to the museum will enjoy it for its art as well as its gardens. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. More information can be found at www.gilcrease.org.
