Glenveagh National Park & Castle
Glenveagh National Park is one of six national parks in Ireland and is located in the Northwest of Donegal county. Glenveagh encircles about 16,000 acres in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains. Such a great wilderness is the home of many interesting plants and animals. These lands were administered as a private deer forest before becoming a national park in 1975. Glenveagh National Park was officially opened to the public in 1986 when public facilities were put in order.
The Glenveagh Visitor Centre is located on the northern end of Lough Veagh, near the edge of the National Park and its award-winning design incorporates a living heather roof immitating the surrounding landscape causing minimum disturbance. The large displays contained within provide an introduction to the parks natural and built history and also provide information on walking trails, events etc. Guides can also provide visitors with information about the park and surrounding area as well as tickets for the park buses.
The Visitors Centre has facilities like Information desk, Car Park, Bus Tickets, Toilets, Baby changing facilities and also a restaurant.
Glenveagh Castle is castle-like mansion built between 1867 and 1873.
It was designed by John Townsend Trench,and it’s builder and first owner was John George Adair. Not many of the great houses of Ireland are preserved in this condition, with their original furnishings, and in Glenveagh Castle visitors can cath a glimpse of a lifestyle belonging to an earlier age. Access to the castle is by guided tour which last about 30 minutes The Castle Tour fee is 3€ for Adults, 2€ for groups or seniors and 1,5€ for children or students.Admission to the National Park and Visitor Centre is without a fee.
Cars are not allowed beyond the visitor centre but a shuttle bus service is available to take visitors to the castle and gardens with a fee of 2€.
