Glyfada
Glyfada is one of Athens' suburbs, located in the southern parts of the Athens Metropolitan Area. The area is well known for being the home many of Greece’s millionaires, ministers and celebrities, stretching out from the foot of the Hymettus mountain to embrace the Saronic Gulf. It is the largest suburb in southern Athens. It also is known in Greece for its upmarket cafes, restaurants, boutiques and summer clubs. That is why Glyfada has also been called “Knightsbridge-on-Sea”, or “Hellenic Hamptons”.
Since the ancient period, the area was a deme (region/rural neighbourhood) known as Aixone. Nowadays, Glyfada is a city packed with some of the capital’s best interest points.
An American airbase was located nearby in the 1980s and this lead to a unique blend of Greek and American atmosphere and cuisine.
Glyfada is also known as the heart of southern Athens, because of its prime waterfront location, rich commercial centre, and modern business district. It is usually described as the head point of the “Athens Riviera” and features some of Europe’s most opulent seafront residences, gardens and extensive beachfront property.
The town hall sits at the center of the municipality. Glyfada’s shopping district has one of the most busy and diversified commercial centres of Athens neighbourhoods. The shopping area runs across Metaxa Avenue and Grigoriou Labraki Street while both the offices of major businesses and shopping areas also dot the Avenues Voyliagmenis, Goynari and Gennitika.
On the quay at Glyfada, a rescue and rehabilitation centre for sea turtles deploys. The centre’s staff provides free educational tours of the facilities and treatments for visitors.
Glyfada is linked to Athens’ center via two major avenues- Posidonos and Vouliagmenis, and a tram line which goes across the seaside next to Posidonos Avenue.
